CYD Endorses HB26-1203: Modification of County Commissioner Elections
The Colorado Young Democrats believe that a healthy democracy depends on fair representation, transparent governance, and systems that give real power to the people. HB26-1203 is an important step toward that vision because it modernizes how county governments operate in Colorado's largest and fastest-growing communities. After reviewing the amended bill and discussing its impact on democratic participation, we strongly endorse HB26-1203.
As amended, the bill requires counties with populations over 70,000 that still elect their commissioners at-large to transition to district-based elections. This change ensures that ever commissioner represents a specific, equally populated district rather than relying on countywide at large elections that can dilute local representation. In addition, with voter approval, counties must expand their boards from three to five members, improving accountability and allowing for more diverse perspectives in local decision-making.
By eliminating outdated at-large systems and requiring representation that reflects the geographic and demographic realities of these communities, HB26-1203 strengthens local democracy. At a time when trust in government is fragile and anti-democratic forces are gaining momentum across the country, this bill increases transparency, improves responsiveness, and helps build public confidence in county government.
The Colorado Young Democrats urge lawmakers to pass HB26-1203 and move Colorado toward a more representative and responsive democracy. This bill is headed to the Colorado senate next so please call your senators to voice your support.
